Legal Officer

Job Description

Our client, a well-established mining operation, is seeking a Legal Officer with exposure to mining or heavy industrial environments to support legal and compliance activities at site level. This role offers hands-on involvement across operational legal. It will suit a commercially minded legal professional who is comfortable operating on site, balancing legal risk with operational realities, and engaging with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to mining operations ensuring compliance with mining and safety legislation.
• Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, agreements, policies, and legal documentation
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting the mining sector and advise management accordingly
• Support regulatory compliance frameworks, audits, risk assessments, and corrective actions
• Manage legal records, compliance registers, and document control systems
• Support labor relations matters, disputes, and litigation where required

Requirements

Qualification and Skill

• National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent
• Minimum 3–5 years’ legal experience within the mining industry (non-negotiable)
• Strong knowledge of South African mining law, contract law, labor law, corporate and regulatory compliance
• Proven experience drafting and reviewing mining-related contracts and legal documentation
• Knowledge of FICA, POPIA, PAIA, and health & safety regulatory frameworks
• Valid Driver’s license
• Mine medical fitness
